Reading

Next week in reading students will be learning about the characteristics of traditional literature. We will be reading fairytales, folktales, myths, and fables.

Math

In math we are currently learning about measurement. This includes measuring time, liquid volume, and mass. When discussing liquid volume we will be focusing on the difference between a liter and a milliliter. When looking at mass we will be using grams and kilograms. 

Writing

Next week we are going to begin writing adaptations of fairytales. Students are choosing from either The Little Red Riding Hood or The Three Billy Goats Gruff. This week we have been studying different adaptations of fairytales to get some ideas of ways that we could adapt our own.

Social Studies

Students are currently learning about economics in social studies. Next week will will be learning about producers and consumers, supply and demand, and also cost-benefit analysis.

Reading

Next week in reading we will be reviewing nonfiction reading skills before taking our post-test. On Friday to end our nonfiction research clubs unit we will be celebrating by watching March of the Penguins.

Math

Next week in math we will be our final week with fractions. Our lessons will focus on comparing fractions (>,< or =) and fractions of whole numbers.

Writing

Next week we are finishing up our research articles. We will also be completing our nonfiction cold write for the end of the unit.

Science

Students are finishing their last week with Mr. Waller. When we return from Spring Break we will begin learning about economics in social studies.

For the last week of our nonfiction research unit we will be focusing on researching our questions as well as developing theories based on our research.

Math

Next week in math we will continue learning about fractions. This week’s focus will be on comparing fractions. The students completed a quiz today that will be sent home Monday. Please check your student’s Everyday folder.

Writing

Next week we are continuing to compose our research articles. Our lessons will focus on introductions, conclusions, and revision.

Science

Students are continuing to learn about force and motion with Mr. Waller.

Reading

In reading we will be focusing on how to think deeply about our reading and our research. So far we have mostly focused on how we can effectively research and understand our topics. This week we will try to grow our own ideas and come up with questions to push our research even further.

Math

Next week in math we will continue learning about fractions. In addition, we are going to study line plots and length as they relate to fractions. We will take a short quiz on Friday covering the fractions concepts we have taught so far. If fractions are still tricky for your child, do not worry as we will continue to study fractions the following week. 

Writing

Next week we are going to examine our research and determine what our most interesting and important notes and ideas are. We will then begin constructing our research articles.

Science

Students are continuing to learn about force and motion with Mr. Waller.

Reading

In reading students will be continuing to read about and research animals. Our focus will be learning about different text structures that nonfiction books and articles use. Some of the text structures will include cause and effect and problem and solution formats.

Next week we are beginning nonfiction book clubs. Students will be working cooperatively to research an animal using books, magazines, and online resources. Students will then be using their research to write a nonfiction text over their animal. 

Math

Next week in math we will be starting our first unit on fractions.  This tends to be a tricky concept for many students so please be on the lookout for our quick checks next week to see how your child is doing. I will also be adding several practice assignments related to fractions on Khan Academy that students will be able to access at home.

Writing

As we are learn about text structures in reading, students will be practicing using them during writing time. The text structures students will try out in there own writing will be cause and effect, problem and solution, and compare and contrast.

Science

Students are continuing learning about force and motion with Mr. Waller.

Next week in reading we will be taking our Character Study end of unit assessment. After we review our assessments, we will begin our next reading unit, called Research Clubs. For this unit, we are setting our focus back on nonfiction reading skills.

Math

Next week in math we are going to continue to learn how to multiply by multiples of 10. We will also be practicing 2 step word problems that include addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Writing

Students are continuing to work on their persuasive speeches. Our students are now focusing on gathering good evidence and examples that will convince the audience to change their minds.

Social Studies

Next week students will have time to share about the culture posters or papers they have made. On Thursday we will begin science again, our class will be rotating to Mr. Waller’s room to learn about force and motion.

Reading

Next week in reading we will be reading a new read aloud book, called Make Way For Diamond Daniel. Our focus will be to compare and contrast the characters, problems, and themes with Because of Winn Dixie, our last read aloud. We will also be taking a district reading assessment to track our progress so far.

Math

Next week in math we will be briefly reviewing our test, before we begin studying how to multiply multiples of 10. We have a district math assessment to take as well.

Writing

Students are continuing to work on their persuasive speeches. Our lessons focus on considering the audience and paragraphing to organize our speeches.

Social Studies

This week during culture, students are researching a country of their choice and writing an essay to teach the class about it. For research, we will be using the site https://online.culturegrams.com/kids/index.php. If time allows we will also be making posters to share about our culture.
